Make an upholstered lined box
In this friendly upholstery leisure course, each student makes their own bespoke upholstered lined storage box - resulting in an interesting and rewarding learning journey AND a very useful piece furniture.
The 40x60x40cm box will have a hinged lid and a cushioned top, perfect for storage, or as a little side table and robust enough even to use as an occasional perch. Working with traditional tools, sustainable natural materials, we will take time and care to gain confidence with the tools & techniques and best of all each student will be able to choose their own decorative finish.
Making this useful piece (a lidded hinged storage box) allows for a really bespoke student finish (Add feet, shallow buttoning, piping, deep buttoning, etc) but it also teaches a broad range of technical upholstery skills, in fact the lined box is a curriculum project on the AMUSF formal 1 year accreditation - the beauty is, we are making it simply for pleasure.
As with all my workshops this one is beginner friendly but those with previous upholstery experience will also enjoy the challenges and processes involved in making this stand alone piece from frame.
Groups are kept small, max 6 people, I provide tuition, the core box frame, all tools for use throughout, all materials, with the exception of Top Fabric, and each student leaves with their own me-made box.
Workshops take place in my Studio in Star Brewery in the centre of Lewes, a historic market town just an hour from London, 15 mins from Brighton, and so there will be lots of live upholstery projects from commissions and other student groups to reference and discuss, over a cup of tea.
My goal is to share the joy of using your hands, to give people the skills and confidence to consider future upholstery projects, to think about materials & the environmental impact of the choices our making creates. I see my role as helping you learn at a pace and level that suits you, matching my approach to what best works for you, this is your time, and your experience. I'll share tips, anecdotes, ideas, we'll laugh a lot, and learn a lot too. I want you to be proud of what you make and I want you to feel emboldened to keep on being creative.
I provide tuition, the core box frame, all tools for use throughout, all materials, with the exception of Top Fabric, and each student leaves with their own me-made box. Tea/coffee/biscuits throughout.
All activities are entered into at the participants own risk.
